At approximately 21:15 on March 15, 2012 the Bel Air VFC with the assistance from the Fallston VFC was alerted to respond to a report of a dwelling fire in the 200 blk. of Broadview Avenue off of Bel Air Rd. Additional information provided advised of multiple calls indicating a fire in the garage. A second report indicated that there also may be a subject trapped inside. First arriving units found a single story residence with heavy fire conditions throughout but fortunately no entrapment of the occupant.

The fire was contained within 20 minutes by approximately 50 volunteer firefighters. Crews were faced with severe cluttering conditions and a double roof which made for a difficult fire attack. During the incident operations were switched to a defensive mode as the ladder pipe from TW331 was placed in service to help with containment.

There were no injuries reported. Damage estimates are at approximately $200,000. The cause of the fire is under investigation by the OSFM.

March 20, 2012
My family would just like to thank the firefighters who responded so quickly to the 911 calls last Thursday in Bel Air Acres. We are extremely grateful for their quick arrival and immediate action in controlling the fire. The firefighters overcame several obstacles including a highly combustible residence and having to cross Route 1 to gain access to the nearest fire hydrant.
I felt compelled to write this after viewing people's comments on the Internet about this story. I believe the focus should be put on our volunteer fire department that risked their lives and prevented any further loss.
Katie G.
Bel Air

Katie- Thank You for your kind words. I speak for all the Volunteer Fire Companies and Members that responded to this call. Our members truly appreciate your thoughts. We are sorry that your family must endure this loss.

Volunteer Fire and Ambulance Company (FVFAC) was dispatched for a report of a
motor vehicle crash at Carrs Mill Road and Ryan Road. Responding units located
a single vehicle crash on Carrs Mill Road close to Winters Run. The vehicle,

WINTER FIRE SAFETY TIPS

As the temperatures have gotten colder outside, we are depending on multiple types of heating sources to stay warm inside our homes. The Fallston Volunteer Fire and Ambulance Company and State Fire Marshal William E. Barnard offer residents the following life safety and home heating safety tips.

“Elements of home heating continue to be a significant factor in home fires in Maryland,” according to the Fire Marshal. “Following these guidelines, we can work together to reduce the number of residential fires.”

You should:
---Ensure chimneys are cleaned annually or more frequently if used as the primary heating equipment.

---Use properly sized fireplace screens or enclosures. Never use a flammable liquid to start a fire.

---When disposing of cooled ashes, do not use paper or plastic containers.
To remove them, use a metal container. Ashes will insulate hot embers long after the fire is considered out.

---Make sure fuel burning stoves are installed according to local fire codes and the manufacturer’s instructions.

---Have your furnace inspected and serviced annually.

---Check portable electric heaters for frayed or damaged wires. Ensure
that they are clean and placed on a flat level surface. Use only heaters that are “listed” by an approved testing laboratory for this type of equipment and follow all manufacturers’ instructions.

---Do not use extension cords or strip outlets with portable electric space heaters. The extension cord or strip outlet can overheat and cause a fire.

---If you use kerosene fuel fired heaters, use only “K-1” kerosene fuel. Never fill the unit inside. Always remove it to the exterior of the building after it has cooled before refueling. Open a window enough to provide proper ventilation.

---Keep combustibles (furniture, curtains, clothing, paper goods, etc.), at least three feet from all heat sources.

---Fuel burning appliances can produce the deadly, tasteless and odorless gas known as carbon monoxide. Install and maintain carbon monoxide (CO) alarms inside your home to provide an early warning of carbon monoxide in the atmosphere.

---Always turn off portable heating equipment when leaving the room for extended periods. Portable heaters should never be operated while unattended.

Along with these heating tips, check to make sure your smoke alarms are in good working order. “Routine maintenance and safe operation of heating equipment, combined with properly installed and operating smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors, are a life-saving combination for all Marylanders,” stated Fire Marshal Barnard.
The FVFAC has smoke alarms available for area residents that need them. Smoke alarms do have a "shelf life" of approximately ten years and should be replaced prior to reaching that age.
If you would like further information on home fire safety please contact the Fallston Volunteer Fire and Ambulance Co....

At approximately 1100 hours Sunday November 27, 2011 the Fallston Volunteer Fire and Ambulance Company (FVFAC) was dispatched to a motor vehicle collision in the 1700 block of Carrs Mill Road. While en route, units were advised by Fire Dispatch that the Harford County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) had already requested a response by Maryland State Police Aviation for aero-medical transport of a patient to a trauma center. On arrival at 1103 hours, FVFAC personnel found a passenger car versus motorcycle collision, with one victim, the motorcycle operator, lying in the roadway. As EMT’s and paramedic personnel from FVFAC assessed this victim, it was rapidly determined that he had suffered multi-system trauma, was pulse less, non-breathing, and exhibited no signs of cardiac electrical activity. At this time the victim was pronounced deceased by the FVFAC paramedic on scene and the response of the MSP helicopter was cancelled. The operator of the passenger car denied any injuries and did not require EMS treatment or transport. The scene was turned over to the HCSO for their investigation into the cause of the collision.

Units responded early Sunday morning to a reported motor vehicle collision with rescue at the intersection of Harford Road and Reckord Road involving a BGE truck. Units arrived to find a large tree on top of a BGE truck with multiple live wires down in the roadway. Both BGE workers self extricated prior to units arriving on the scene. Both workers were transported to Upper Chesapeake Medical Center for evaluation of non-life threatening injuries.

The department is still cleaning up from the storm days later and attempting to make access to different parts of our area damaged by the storm.
