Dwelling Fire
Date:
Wednesday, June 17, 2009
Shortly after midnight on June 17, while many members of the company were at the MSFA Convention in O.C., Harford County 911 received a call reporting a dwelling fire in the 2500 block of Crestview Drive in Fallston. Initial reports from the caller indicated a basement fire with heavy smoke in the residence. The caller also stated that he was still trying to get his family members out of the dwelling. Harford County Fire Dispatch upgraded the assignment to a Fire/Rescue Box bringing units from Fallston (Co. 13), Bel Air (Co. 3), and Jarrettsville (Co. 7) Volunteer Fire Companies in Harford County along with units from Kingsville (Sta. 48) and Jacksonville (Sta. 47) Volunteer Fire Companies in Baltimore County to the scene. First arriving Engine 1311 reported smoke showing from a 1.5 story wood frame dwelling. Initial survey of the scene determined that there was fire showing from the basement window in the Bravo/Charlie corner. All residents were determined to be out of the structure and accounted for at this time. The crew from Engine 1311 advanced a 1.75" hoseline through the front door (side Alpha, Division 1) of the dwelling and proceeded to the basement via the interior stairway and was able to begin extinguishing the fire which had extended into the ceiling of the basement. As additional units arrived, crews from Bel Air, Jarrettsville, and Jacksonville Volunteer Fire Companies stretched back-up hoselines, performed ventilation, and checked for fire extension. Kingsville VFC Tanker Truck 488 insured that an adequate additional water supply was available if needed. The fire was contained within 20 minutes by the crews initially dispatched. During the course of the fire attack both members of E.1311's attack crew suffered injuries requiring transport to area hospitals. One member was transported to Johns Hopkins Bayview for evaluation and treatment of a respiratory problem. He was released later in the day. The other firefighter was transported to Upper Chesapeake Medical Center for treatment of a knee injury. He was also released a few hours later. An investigator from the Office of the State Fire Marshal responded to determine the cause and origin of the fire. Results of his investigation along with estimates of the damage were not immediately available.
