Volunteer Firefighters: Answering the Call

Friday, December 10, 2010  The TV news show CBS Sunday Morning ran a story November 28, 2010 highlighting the importance of the volunteer fire service in the United States. Reporter Peter Greenberg provides a glimpse into this noble and long-standing vocation and how communities across the country rely on volunteer firefighters to keep them safe. In this holiday season, Greenberg reminds Americans of all that our volunteers do to serve their communities every day. The segment includes footage from this year’s National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Service, held annually in Emmitsburg, Maryland to pay tribute to the dedicated men and women of volunteer and career fire departments that have made the ultimate sacrifice to protect their communities.

As the Fallston Community, as well as the rest of Harford County is protected by an all Volunteer fire and rescue service, we ask that you please take a few minutes to watch the video.  It provides some great information and insight on the financial savings your Harford County Volunteer Fire and EMS Companies provide to the government and citizens of Harford County, and throughout the country and also the sacrifices they sometimes face.

Winter Safety

Saturday, November 27, 2010  Here are some safety tips on how to stay warm and safe this Winter courtesy of www.nfpa.org

  • Keep anything that can burn at least three feet away from heating equipment, like the furnace, fireplace, wood stove, or portable sapce heater.
  • Have a three-foot “kid-free zone” around open fires and space heaters.
  • Never use your oven to heat your home.
  • Have a qualified professional install stationary space heating equipment, water heaters or central heating equipment according to the local codes and manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Have heating equipment and chimneys cleaned and inspected every year by a qualified professional.
  • Remember to turn portable heaters off when leaving the room or going to bed.
  • Always use the right kind of fuel, specified by the manufacturer, for fuel burning space heaters.
  • Make sure the fireplace has a sturdy screen to stop sparks from flying into the room. Ashes should be cool before putting them in a metal container. Keep the container a safe distance away from your home.
  • Test smoke alarms monthly.
Remember any questions you have please contact your local Fire Department.

Dwelling Fire

Monday, November 8, 2010 1523 hrs On November 8, 2010 at 1523 hours the Fallston Volunteer Fire and Ambulance Company, Inc. and surrounding companies were dispatched for a reported dwelling fire at 2302 Franklins Chance Court in the Upper Cross Roads area. The first alarm assignment included Fallston (Co. 13), Jarrettsville (Co. 7), Jacksonville (Balt. Co. Sta.47), and Long Green (Balt. Co. Sta. 38) Volunteer Fire Companies. First arriving Engine 1312 reported finding a single story dwelling with heavy fire through the roof and proceeded to lay 1000’ of 4” supply hose from Franklins Chance Drive and Route 152 to the scene. The initial incident commander then updated the status of the incident and reported two victims possibly inside the dwelling. As Truck (Quint) 1331 arrived their crew advanced a 1.75” hand line through the front door of the dwelling and began fire attack and a primary search in an attempt to locate the victims. Upon the arrival of Tanker 1321 water supply (dump site) was set up at the intersection of Franklins Chance Drive and Route 152. Engine 712 then arrived on location and completed the supply line for Engine 1312 to the fire ground. Engine 712 and Engine 1312 both operated multiple attack lines throughout the incident. Crews from Fallston, Jarrettsville, and Jacksonville Volunteer Fire Companies continued an aggressive interior attack on the fire. However, due to the volume of fire conditions rapidly deteriorated, crews were evacuated, and a defensive operation was ordered by Command (Asst. Chief 13-1 Bob Stanton). A ladder pipe operation was initiated by Truck 1331 which was able to rapidly extinguish the bulk of the fire. Crews then re-entered the structure at 15:48 hours and continued fire attack. The fire was declared under control by Command at 15:52 hours.
There was no rescue required of occupants of the dwelling during the operation; all reported victims were safely located at a neighbor’s residence. The water supply draft site was established at 15:38 hours by Supply 781 the pond located at Route 152 and Pocock Road. Large capacity tankers from Fallston, Long Green, Kingsville (Balt. Co. Sta. 48), Hereford (Balt. Co. Sta. 44), and Norrisville (Co. 10) were requested to the scene by Command to assist with water supply. A tanker shuttle was established to provide water supply for continued suppression operations on the fire ground. A total of 20,000 gallons of water were shuttled by the tankers to the scene. The tanker shuttle, once established, was able to provide uninterrupted water supply to the scene. In addition, three engines with 1000 gallons of water each were on the scene during the entire incident to supplement any water supply problems.               A total of 7 engines, 1 truck (quint), 1 tower, 5 large capacity tankers, 3 tanker support units and 2 IV units responded on the call from the Fallston, Bel Air, Jarrettsville, Kingsville, Jacksonville, Hereford, Long Green and Norrisville Volunteer Fire Companies with a total of 50 firefighters. There were no civilians or fire service personnel injuries reported during the incident. Rehab was provided by Bel Air VFC Rehab Unit 388.
Investigators from the Office of the State Fire Marshal is investigating the cause and origin of the fire, which is believed to be accidental at this time. Damage to the structure is estimated to be at least $400,000 with additional losses to the occupant’s personal property.
