May 15, 2024

Friday, May 10, 2024, at approximately 9 p.m., the one thing we all fear on the roadway happened to our public safety partners at Kingsville Volunteer Fire Company. While operating on the scene of a motor vehicle collision on I-95 (JFK), both their Engine and Squad were struck by a vehicle. Fortunately, they were in the apparatus when it was struck, and no emergency personnel were struck outside of the equipment. Everyone is ok!

There is never a moment that we let our guard down on a roadway, and those who respond to the calls on the highway must be on even higher alert.

Fallston Volunteer Fire and Ambulance Co. has a close working relationship with Kingsville VFC, and Chief McKinney immediately jumped into action when information about the incident was received. Chief 13 and Engine 1311 transferred to Kingsville VFC and summoned additional Fallston Volunteers to Fallston VFAC for in-station coverage of our community. Once Fallston VFAC units arrived at Kingsville VFC, our personnel immediately realized the EMS unit in the station at Kingsville VFC was a volunteer crew. Chief McKinney then requested Fallston VFAC Medic 13A to transfer to relieve the crew at Kingsville, as Medic 13 was also staffed at our Carrs Mill Road Station.

These incidents impact personnel whether they are on the scene or not. Relieving those still in the station to assist the company in other ways and potentially needing a support system at the hospital becomes essential in an incident involving public safety personnel. There is a family dynamic in the fire service, and when one is in need, others step up to help with no questions asked.

We cannot echo enough about the Move Over and Slow Down Law when emergency personnel operate on the roadway. This includes multiple affiliated agencies other than public safety. Refraining from being a distracted or impaired driver is also imperative to keeping not only you and your family safe but also our family.

Friday night at approximately 2100hrs E481, S483 and M485 responded to I95 South at Mile Marker 68 for a reported medical emergency. Shortly after arriving on scene the engine and squad were both struck by a vehicle causing significant damage to both pieces. The crash resulted in two patients trapped in the other vehicle. Members, without hesitation, began extrication efforts and removed the two patients with the assistance of surrounding companies. The cause of the accident is still under investigation.
8 members of Kingsville were transported to Shock Trauma with minor injuries. All have since been released and are doing well!
We as members of Kingsville, while disappointed with the damage that has occurred to our equipment, are extremely grateful that no lives were lost and everyone is home safe. This could’ve very easily ended so much worse. We are grateful that our apparatus did its “job” and protected our members from further injuries.

We urge everyone to SLOW DOWN and MOVE OVER when you see emergency apparatus on the roadway.

We as a company would also like to thank countless number of people and companies for their support over the past couple days including, but not limited to the following-

Fallston Volunteer Fire and Ambulance Co.
Bowleys Quarters Volunteer Fire Rescue & Marine
Baltimore County Volunteer Firefighters Association
Baltimore County Fire Department
Joppa Magnolia Volunteer Fire Company
