RESIDENTIAL SPRINKLERS
Date: Tuesday, January 29, 2008
ONE FIRE SPRINKLER SAVES THE COMMUNITY

Just before 2:00am on Tuesday January 29th, members of the Citizens Volunteer Fire Company were awakened by a report of an automatic fire alarm at their firehouse on Main Street in Fawn Borough. Volunteers arrived to find smoke inside the building and a fire that had been extinguished by their fire sprinkler system. Had it not been for a single fire sprinkler head, the results could have been disastrous for the communities of southern York and northern Harford County.

The fire originated in a mechanical room where the organization’s computer, phone, and electrical equipment are stored. Damage caused by the fire was limited to $20,000-$25,000. Representatives from the Citizens Volunteer Fire Company estimate that to replace the building and equipment inside would cost close to $8 million. This amount does not factor in the additional cost to the surrounding fire companies and the population who live and work in York and Harford Counties and rely on emergency services from this organization.

The firehouse, which was built in 1996 at a cost of approximately $870,000.00, was not required by the building code to have a fire sprinkler system installed. The fire company and other fire service professionals decided that installing a fire sprinkler system would be a smart thing to do. Their decision proved to be the right one.

Does your home have a fire sprinkler system installed?

BOX 1302 Commercial Structure Fire
Date: Monday, October 01, 2007
A fire believed to be intentionally set destroyed a Fallston adult-entertainment store and slightly injured a firefighter early today, authorities said.

Firefighters responded to a call for the fire at Express Videos in the 2100 block of Belair Road at 12:45 a.m., said Derek Chapman, a deputy state fire marshal.

Chapman said the fire is being investigated as arson, but did not provide specifics.

“We have one lead we are looking into now,” he said, without elaborating.

A firefighter with the Bel Air Volunteer Fire Company , suffered minor injuries to his shoulder when fire equipment struck him, Chapman said. The firefighter was treated and released at Upper Chesapeake Medical Center in Bel Air.

It took 45 firefighters 35 minutes to put out the blaze, Chapman said. Units from the Fallston, Bel Air, Kingsville, Joppa, Jarrettsville and Level fire departments responded.

Fires had been set on the front porch and the outside rear portion of the one-story, wood-frame store, the fire marshal’s office said.

Second-degree arson carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison and a $20,000 fine, Chapman said.

The store and its contents were valued at $400,000 Chapman said.

The store’s owner has been notified and is cooperating with investigators, the fire marshal’s office said.

2nd Alarm Dwelling Fire in Joppa
Date: Sunday, September 02, 2007
At approximately 1405 hrs. on Sunday September 2, 2007 Harford County
911 dispatched units from Joppa-Magnolia, Kingsville (Balt. Co.), White
Marsh (Balt. Co.) Volunteer Fire Cos. and the Aberdeen Proving Ground Fire
Fire Department to a report of a dwelling fire in the 400 block of Breslin
Road in Joppatowne. First arriving units found smoke from the second floor
of a two story cape cod style single family dwelling. Shortly after arrival
of units the fire vented through the roof of the structure. Crews began an
agressive interior attack, but were driven out of the structure due to the
sudden deterioration of conditions on the second floor. Additional resources
were requested by command bringing units from the Fallston and Abingdon
Volunteer Fire Companies to the scene and a defensive attack was initiated
from the exterior of the structure. After the bulk of the fire was
extinguished crews reentered the dwelling and continued extinguishing the
remaining fire in the second floor. The heavy fire load within the dwelling
combined with the style of construction allowed this fire to advance rapidly
in void spaces and create a challenge for the crews. There were no injuries
reported. One occupant of the dwelling was at home when the fire broke out
and was able to self-evacuate prior to the arrival of the fire department.
The American Red Cross is assisting the family in the aftermath of this
fire. The Maryland State Fire Fire Marshals Office is investigating the
cause and origin of the fire.

County Executive and Staff Visit Storm Damaged Areas in Fallston
Clean up from July tornado continues

(Fallston, MD – August 9, 2007) - - Harford County Executive David R. Craig, accompanied by Chief of Staff Aaron Tomarchio and Mary Chance, Director of the Department of Community Services, recently visited several property owners in Fallston to assess storm response and clean-up efforts. The county executive toured several properties and met with nearly a dozen homeowners in an effort to gauge the effectiveness of the county’s response following a tornado which swept through the Fallston area on Monday evening July 16.

Areas visited by the county executive and staff included Friendship Road, Chateau Drive, Burgundy Drive, Bordeaux Court and Claret Drive. One property owner on Burgundy Drive had 25 trees destroyed or heavily damaged as a result of the storm. In addition to blocked roadways and streets, the storm downed trees resulting in damages to homes, patio furniture, outbuildings, fences and personal property.

Residents of the area expressed their appreciation for the prompt response of the county’s volunteer fire service, local law enforcement, the local Boy Scout troop, the Department of Public Works, Highways Division and Solid Waste Management Division and the Department of Community Services for the assistance provided both during and after the storm.

Commenting on the recovery efforts, County Executive Craig stated, “We are gratified with the progress being made to restore the Fallston community to normalcy following such a dramatic storm. The efforts put forth by volunteers, scouts; law enforcement, fire service personnel and our dedicated county employees were nothing short of exemplary.”

Although most county roads and side streets were reopened to the public within 48 hours of the storm, clean-up in some neighborhoods will continue for several weeks to come.

Mutual Aid RESCUE BOX 818
Date: Wednesday, August 01, 2007
At 1948 hrs (7:48 P.M.) Wednesday evening (August 1, 2007) Harford County
911 received a call reporting a 12 year old girl stuck in mud up to her
waist near the 200 block of Haverhill Rd. in Joppatowne (Harford County).
The location of the incident was on the property of a quarry to the rear of
the address given. First arriving units from the Joppa Magnolia Volunteer
Fire Company found that this call would test the training and ingenuity of
responders quickly, and that with the combined resources of several agencies
this incident would have a positive outcome.
As initial crews reached the victim on foot through the quarry, they began
to assess her condition and also determined that access to the scene would
be a major obstacle. In order to reach the victim on foot recuers had to
walk approximately 1/4 mile through a field, woods, down embankments, and
through the quarry. All Terrain Vehicles (ATV's) were requested from Harford
County Volunteer and Aberdeen Proving Ground (APG) Fire Departments to
transport personnel and equipment. Additional crews along with specialized
equipment from the Harford County Technical Rescue Team for trench rescues
were requested and dispatched. Approximately 75 personnel from Harford
County and Baltimore County Volunteer Fire Companies and the APG Fire Dept.
were involved in the rescue effort. Rescue personnel had to construct a
platform to work from while attempting to free the girl from the waist deep
mud. Once this was accomplished, rescuers were able to remove a sufficient
amount of the mud manually to free her legs and remove her to solid ground.
During the extrication process the incident commander requested Maryland
State Police Aviation (MSP) along with the "GO TEAM" for transport of the
victim and to begin advanced medical treatment if needed during the
extrication, packaging, and transport of the victim. At 2320 hrs (11:20
P.M.) the victim was extricated. She was transported to Johns Hopkins
Pediatric Intensive Care in Baltimore by MSP Helicopter for evaluation and
treatment of her injuries. During the extrication two volunteer fire
fighters were treated for heat related distress.

F1 Tornado Hits Fallston
Date: Monday, July 16, 2007
On Monday evening, 07/16/2007 at about 6pm a severe thunderstorm hit most of Harford County. During this storm an F1 Tornado ripped through Fallston leaving a path of destruction 150 yards wide and approximately 4 miles long. The F1 Tornado was packing winds between 86 and 109 miles per hour. Over 300 calls were received at The Harford County 911 Center with 22 calls for the Fallston area.
The 911 calls from the Fallston Community consisted of several tree and wires down, tree into a house, tree onto a car with people trapped and various other types of calls for service. Some of these calls were extremely difficult to get to because of the amount of trees across roadways, electrical lines across roadways, and flooded roads. The hardest hit areas of Fallston were Brandy Wine Farms, Laurel Brook Rd, and Gunpowder State Park. One call for people trapped could only be accessed on foot after a 1/2 mile trek through the woods. All calls were eventually handled by Company 13, or with help from our Mutual Aid companies. Surprisingly, no storm related injuries to either civilians or fire department personnel were reported countywide.

Date: Thursday, January 11, 2007
At 0711 hours Thursday January 11, 2007 Harford County 911 dispatched a report of a townhouse fire with possible persons trapped at 313 Adair Ct. in Joppatowne. First arriving units (at 0716
hrs.) reported smoke from the second floor of a middle of the group townhouse. This status was soon upgraded to a working fire with fire in the second floor and attic area. These townhouses are constructed with firewalls extending above the second floor ceilings only at every second or third unit and with a common attic area which allows rapid fire spread in the upper levels of the dwelings. As first arriving crews entered 313 and 311 Adair Ct. and began an aggressive interior attack, second and third alarms were dispatched to provide additional manpower and equipment. Crews contained the fire within 25 minutes. 313 and 311 Adair Ct. sustained fire damage, 315 sustained smoke and water damage. The American Red Cross was on the scene to assist approximately 12 displaced residents of the damaged homes. A temporary shelter was established at the Trimble Rd.
station of the Joppa Magnolia Volunteer Fire Company to serve the immediate needs of the occupants. Approximately 75 personnel responded from Harford and Baltimore County volunteer fire companies and career fire companies from Aberdeen Proving Ground Fire Department and the Baltimore County Fire Department. BOX 1305 VEHICLE vs. HOUSE
Date: Wednesday, January 03, 2007
At 2337 hours (11:37 P.M.) Wednesday January 3 Harford County 911 dispatched the Fallston Volunteer Fire and Ambulance Co. to a reported motor vehicle crash with a subject trapped, involving a car into a house in the 600 block of Old Fallston Road. First arriving units (at 2341 hours) found a car which had left the roadway, became airborne, and landed on its side on the roof of the structure.
The lone occupant (operator) of the vehicle, a 45 year old female, was trapped in the vehicle. The two occupants of the dwelling were in the home at the time of the crash and were uninjured. The occupants of the house were able to exit the house on their own prior to the arrival of emergency crews. As fire/rescue personnel further assessed the scene, it was determined that additional resources would be required. Due to the initial estimation of the length of time needed to extricate the patient and the structural instability of the dwelling the Harford County Volunteer Fire and EMS Tactical Rescue Team Structural Collapse units were dispatched. Crews also encountered an active gas leak due to the crash, this prompted a full first alarm dwelling assignment to be dispatched. The patient was extricated at 0003 hours (12:03 A.M. 1/04/07) and was transported to University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore for evaluation and treatment of potentially life threatening injuries. Emergency personnel along with Harford County Chief Building Inspector Richard Truitt, stood by while a local towing service removed the vehicle from the roof of the structure along with the damaged propane storage tank. Last fire/rescue units cleared the scene at
0152 hours. The building inspector is evaluating the condition of the structure. The accident is being investigated by the Harford County Sheriff's Office. Fire companies dispatched to this incident were as follows -

Co.13 Helps Evacuees From Lebanon
Date: Tuesday, July 25, 2006

Harford County - Medics from the Fallston Volunteer Fire and Ambulance Company were on hand during the weekend to help treat hundreds of evacuees being flown into Baltimore from Lebanon, officials said.

American citizens fleeing the violence between the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah and Israel have been arriving in the U.S. at Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport, many after enduring airstrikes in Lebanon, evacuations to Cyprus and stops in Manchester, England. Members of the Red Cross and emergency crews from across the state were called in to aid the evacuees as they disembarked.

On Sunday, the Maryland Emergency Management Agency called in emergency medical personnel to help receive two flights of evacuees early Sunday morning, Harford Volunteer Fire Department and EMS spokesman Dave Williams said.

From 4 to 10 a.m., three Fallston medics helped set up “triage, treatment and transport” areas at the airport to check up on any health complaints for people coming off the plane through customs, Williams said.

While there were many general complaints of travel- and fatigue-related aches and pains, only about seven people required serious medical care, and three of them were transported to local hospitals, said Fallston EMS Lt. James Hamilton.

“I don’t want to say it was like an assembly line, but it was very efficient,” Williams said.

Before leaving the airport, patients were encouraged to report any medical complaints so they could be treated, he said.

“It was mostly general problems,” EMS Capt. Christopher Aycock said. “There were some heat complaints, coming from Cyprus; dehydration ... some people hadn’t had anything to drink for a long time.”

Another patient was transported to a local hospital for symptoms of cardiac problems, Hamilton said.

“These people, in general, have been up for a long time. ... A lot of them have been traveling for several days and were very tired,” he said.

A Generous Donation
Date: Tuesday, November 30, 2004
On November 30, 2004 The FVFAC was greeted with special guests and friends, Congressman Wayne Gilchrest and Delegate Joanne Parrott. While visiting with us they presented the The Fallston Volunteer Fire And Ambulance Co. with a Garrison Flag to call our own. This is a very large flag used during funerals. It will be suspended in the air between ladder trucks and the funeral procession will pass underneath. We have had to borrow one in the past for these incidents but now we have our own. The FVFAC would like to graciously thank Congressman Gilchrest and Delegate Parrott for their generous donation of the flag. (Double Click Photo for enlargement) THANK YOU!!
